The year in review - Arles

One of the highlights of the year was attending the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in the southern French town of Arles. The meetings are an opportunity for leading photographers from all over the planet to get together and share their vision with like-minded people. In effect, this means the town is teeming with nutters armed with cameras, who run around snapping at 8 o'clock in the morning. For me, the July fest was an opportunity to reunite with my posse from the Gobelins photography school in Paris. Corinne, Sendrine, Charles and I met in late March when we enrolled on an intensive course that spanned everything from studio photography to laboratory development. Sendrine and I attended two workshops at Arles, a one-day group with Martin Parr, who curated the festival in 2004, and a four-day workshop with French photographer Laure Vasconi. On our last day, all the students from the different workshops taking place that week put up their work in a small gallery space in the centre of town and we celebrated with drinks. The evening ended with a wild party in an underground cellar where students and photographers kicked up a storm to a rollicking soundtrack of gypsy music! Scroll down for further pictures...
